Referral partnership ideas that aren’t selling to each other

A referral partnership is a relationship between two business owners who serve the same customer and help each other reach that customer. It does not have to start with sending each other clients, and it usually shouldn’t.

You just met this person, and you don’t know yet if you’d trust them with your best customer. So the question is how you move the relationship forward without selling anything. I gave four ways to do it on Businessing with Pat Miller, and all four work before anybody pitches anybody.

What is an asset trade in a referral partnership?

An asset trade is when you have something you can’t sell, the other person finds it valuable, and you swap. No money changes hands and both businesses come out ahead. There was a perfect example in the news this week. Topgolf had a problem: people came in, hit a bucket of balls, and left. They wanted guests to stay longer and buy another drink. So they partnered with a company that owns old school arcade games. Topgolf had the space and the crowd. The arcade company had the games and needed a place to put them. They traded, and nobody sold anything to anybody.

Now take a wedding DJ. Nobody books a wedding for a Tuesday morning, so that time is unsold inventory. But a wedding planner who hosts a Tuesday open house for engaged couples would love a DJ in the room. He gets in front of couples, she gets a better event, and that’s a partnership in action before a single referral ever happens.

How do you co-create content with a referral partner?

The simplest version is a co-branded webinar. You don’t need to rent a hall or plan a runway show. You and your partner both talk to the same audience, so you put on a one-hour “ask us anything” session together and invite both lists. Webinars are nearly free to run, and they hand you two things you can use for months: a video of you being smart on camera, and a transcript. From the video you can cut clips for TikTok and Instagram all year. From the transcript you can write blogs, and you can train your AI partner on exactly how you talk about what you do.

The bigger payoff is that you’ve now built something together. You’ve seen how the other person shows up, how they treat their audience, and whether you’d actually want to send them your people. That’s the information you need before the referral part ever begins.

Why does a link swap matter for AI search?

A link swap is when you write a guest blog for your partner’s website and they write one for yours. It used to be a plain search engine play. Now it matters more, because the AI tools deciding who to quote as an authority are looking for trust signals, and one of the strongest signals is the same person speaking on the same topic across multiple websites. If I write a guest post for a partner’s site and she writes one for smallbusinesscommunity.com, both of us look more trustworthy to whatever is deciding who shows up in the answer.

This is the easiest of the four to start. It takes one email and one afternoon of writing. If you can only do one thing on this list this week, do this one.

How does a case study build a referral partnership?

Ask your partner if they have a past client you could work with at no charge. You do what you do for that client, and in exchange they agree to give you the story of how it went. You get a real case study with a real business owner, your partner gets to look generous to someone they’ve already served, and the client gets free help. Everybody wins, and once again you’ve reached your partner’s audience without asking them to sell for you.

It also answers the trust question from the other direction. Your partner just watched you do your work for one of their people, so when the referral conversation finally comes up, nobody is guessing.

Questions owners ask

What is a referral partnership?

Two businesses that serve the same customer but don’t compete with each other, like a wedding DJ and a wedding planner.

Do I have to send referrals right away?

No. Start with something lower stakes like an asset trade, a shared webinar, a guest blog swap, or a case study. Referrals come once trust is built.

What’s the fastest one to start with?

The link swap. One email, one guest post each, and you’ve both gained a trust signal for search and AI tools.

How do I pick who to partner with?

Look for people who sell to the same audience you do, not people who do what you do.

Here’s the homework. Go through your LinkedIn messages and your email, find the introductions you’ve been handed and never followed up on, and pick one person. Then start working that relationship in a non-cash way using any of the four ideas above. Do it today, because relationships don’t warm up on their own. The full conversation, including the five rules for setting up a referral partnership, is in the episode. Watch the full episode.
